St. Christopher’s
Established more than 125 years ago, St. Christopher's is a private, not-for-profit, residential special education school. The
garden is located at the St. Christopher's campus in Valhalla, NY, a wooded 35-acre site called the Jennie Clarkson campus,
which is next to the Kensico Reservoir. Greenleaf Gardens Inc. is providing
horticulture education for the residents at St. Christopher's and has provided the planning,
design, and oversight of the garden as well as the integration
into the Jennie Clarkson residential community.
The garden was installed in May of 2009 and in its first six months of operation has produced over 3,500 lbs.
of food for the Food Bank for Westchester and 1,000 lbs of food which was delivered to the head chef for the Jenny Clarkson
community. The garden provides an opportunity for disabled children and young adults to ground themselves as they cultivate
and build the soil. As the students enter into and find their niche in the garden they will begin to see the contributions
they can make to others as they create a place for themselves
in the larger community.
